Our Schoolroom ~ 2014-2015

I LOVE an organized schoolroom! This just makes me happy!

I love organizing. I love, love, love homeschooling. It’s safe to say that organizing our schoolroom is right up there on my “favorite things to do” list! It was already pretty organized, but we added a few fun touches last week in preparation for your visit. Like curtains that my mother-in-law kindly sewed for me (thank you!), and some display book shelves that I had been eyeing for awhile.I hope you’ll enjoy the tour! We don’t have a huge schoolroom but it functions very well for us. We have a large desk with two work spaces. The big kids (our older two) do some of their independent work there. But often, you can find us all sitting together at the dining room table, which is conveniently located next to our schoolroom.

Even though we don’t always do our work in the schoolroom, I am so grateful to have it. It’s a powerhouse organizational tool! The bulk of our books and supplies for the year are held in a combination of Ikea shelves and bins. It works great!

As I was planning for the year I had the brilliant idea that I would use workboxes for my older kids. That lasted barely a week. I’ve learned my lesson. Workboxes just don’t work for us. Or, rather, me. I just don’t want the chore of refilling them at night…even if it is as simple as replacing their workbooks in the drawer. So now we’re using wood bins for my older two. All of the books they need for the week go into the bins. Then, we can just grab and carry them to the table…and simply throw the books back in the bin at the end of the school day! Easy!

The white magazine file boxes above hold workbooks for my kindergartener. The bins hold everything from playdough, to math manipulatives, to art supplies. All labeled with these great editable labels from World Label Blog. I just print them on card stock and use my laminator to make the labels sturdy.

Another time saving trick I’m using this year is having the bulk of our printables (notebooking pages, etc.) organized at the beginning of the year. I simply utilized a hanging file bin with file folders that I labeled by week. Labels are my friend:-)

See those nice white drawers? One top drawer contains printer paper – conveniently located by the printer. The other holds pencils, glue, scissors and other school supplies. I was planning on using the rest of the drawers for workboxes so now they are….empty. Hmmm, I like this. Extra storage space. That is a good problem to have! Across the room is our nice long desk from Ikea. The chairs were $5 Goodwill finds that I painted a light gray. The state art print is from Etsy, framed with an Ikea frame. We made the chalkboards this week too. I had some extra chalkboard paint so my daughter painted some old artwork that we had sitting around. I’m thinking I’ll use the chalkboards to write chore reminders on.

That brings us to the book wall! I had been wanting these acrylic display shelves for awhile and I finally caved and purchased them. I love them! I plan to use them primarily for books on topics that we are currently studying.

Right above the book shelves is a vinyl scripture decal. It’s easily my favorite part of the room.  A constant good reminder!

That about wraps up the tour!  We love our schoolroom! That said, learning happens anywhere. It is much more about a lifestyle for our family than the perfect schoolroom.

Oh yes. And 30 seconds later she was laying on the table…and 60 seconds later she was off doing something else!

Thanks Daksina! When we remodeled and then moved to this house last year everyone gave me such a hard time for picking so much white:-) “Let me guess, she wants this white too?” But I love the simplicity…
      Thanks for stopping by!
